8. Cast Away
Cast Away tells the story of a FedEx executive played by Tom Hanks who is marooned on an uninhabited island for four years where he learns the art of survival. He transforms into the bearded survivalist and his only friend in the lonesome territory is “Wilson the volleyball”.
Walkabout is loosely based on a novel of the same name by James Vance Marshall. Edward Bond did a minimal screenplay of 14 pages which finally satisfied the director, Nicolas Roeg’s need of a great screenplay for this project which he turned into a visual treat while telling the parable of harsh survival of two young kids in the Australian outback.
6. Rescue Dawn
Based on the true story of German-American pilot Dieter Dengler (although there are doubts about the film’s historical accuracy) who is played by Christian Bale who did full justice to his role, Rescue Dawn is about Dengler’s survival, realising that the jungles can be just as cruel and unforgiving as his captors.

Starring Liam Neeson, The Grey is about the survival of the survivors of a plane crash in the Alaskan wilderness as they are hunted by blood thirsty wolves.
Another survival movie based on real events, Alive is a docudrama that details the story of a Uruguayan rugby team who survive a plane crash and get stranded in the snow-covered Andes, depicting their will to survive together.
3. 127 Hours
127 Hours is based on the real life event of outdoorsman Aron Ralston, who did the unthinkable to survive after being stuck against a canyon wall. The movie was directed by Danny Boyle, music score was given by A. R. Rahman and James Franco played the role Aron Ralston.
2. Touching the Void
Based on the book by Joe Simpson, Touching the Void is a true story about the mountaineers, Joe Simpson and Simon Yates’ attempt to reach the summit of Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes. Adaptation of the book of the same name by Jon Krakauer and directed by Sean Penn, Into the Wild is a beautiful tale about the travels of Christopher McCandles (played by Emile Hirsch) who decides to forsake his comfortable life, everything he had to live freely in the wild. Into the Wild is an insightful and inspirational account, which is well-directed and also visually satisfying.
