When you have a movie like Ex Machina, the year can already be considered an excellent year for the sci-fi genre. We are halfway plus one month through 2015 and there are still many more exciting movies, especially in the sci-fi genre, waiting for release. So, here’s Crizic’s list of the 7 most exciting sci-fi movies to come later this year.

7. Absolutely Anything

Director – Terry Jones
Release Date – August 2015

The movie’s cast itself puts it on our must watch radar. Absolutely Anything is a sci-fi comedy which will feature all the living Monty Python members, who voice the aliens in the movie along with Simon Pegg in the lead role and the last screen appearance from Robin Williams who provides the voice of Dennis the Dog. It’s set for release on 14th August in UK.

6. Z for Zachariah

Director – Craig Zobel
Release Date – August 28, 2015

Based on the acclaimed novel by Robert C. O’Brien, the story pf Z for Zachariah follows three people, two men and a woman, played by Chris Pine, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Margot Robbie, who are the last survivors of a disaster that wiped almost our entire civilisation.
And the last time we saw a movie with just three people and that too featuring two men and a woman (although the woman was an A.I.), it was simply amazing (if you haven’t guessed it yet, it’s Ex Machina).

5. The Martian

Director – Ridley Scott
Release Date – October 2, 2015

When you take a look at the people connected with this project, it automatically puts The Martian on top of our list. Can’t be more excited for any another movie. Directed by Ridley Scott and starring a star-studded ensemble cast which includes Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kate Mara, Kristen Wiig, Sean Bean and many more. More reason to get excited about the movie is also the fact that it is based on the already popular self published novel of the same name by Andy Weir. The only thing that bothers is that it feels like they revealed a bit too much in the trailer itself. Hope that’s not a problem when the movie releases.

4. The Lobster

no4 the lobster

Director – Yorgos Lanthimos
Release Date – October 2015

Already a hit among critics and winner of Jury Prize at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, the Greek director’s romantic sci-fi thriller stars Colin Farrell and Lea Seydoux, and will be released on 16th October in UK.

3. Victor Frankenstein

no3 victor frankenstein

Director – Paul McGuigan
Release Date – November 25, 2015

Another adaptation of the horror classic, but this time its a totally different retelling of the tale. The story is told from Igor’s perspective who is portrayed by Daniel Radcliffe, James McAvoy will play the role of Victor Frankenstein, and the movie is directed by Paul McGuigan who is also credited as director of some episodes of the first two seasons of Sherlock.

2. Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens

Director – J.J. Abrams
Release Date – December 18, 2015

And the epic saga continues.
Helmed by J.J. Abrams this time, and starring the stars of the original trilogy in small roles, Star Wars is probably the most anticipated movie of 2015. The cast also includes Domhnall Gleeson and Oscar Isaac, two members of the recent surprise hit belonging to the sci-fi genre, Ex Machina (Yes!, another mention of the movie in this list, because it’s so awesome).

1. High-Rise

no1 High-Rise

Director – Ben Wheatley

Adaptation of J.G. Ballard’s novel of the same name, High-Rise seems to be weirdly interesting and a totally different take on sci-fi. Starring Tom Hiddleston, Sienna Miller, Jeremy Irons, Elisabeth Moss, and Luke Evans, High-Rise already appears to be a promising movie, one that has the plot and cast and director to ensure it to be a successful project. Although a confirm release date is not yet available, it is set for release this year.
